Fall in the mountains

There is nothing quite like a hilly hike on a chilly fall day.  We visited Yellowstone National Park this fall for the first time in over a decade.  Yellowstone was the first National Park in the U.S. and I am not surprised by the 1872 act that established this spectacular 20 million acre park “for […]

Fall city bike

There is nothing quite like seaplanes circling over South Lake Union on a beautiful fall day in Seattle. When I am biking out of the city, I am focused on the views and the grandeur of the great outdoors. However, I always need to find just the right safe paths to bike on in the city.  The […]

Fall at the beach

There is nothing quite like a beach walk on a brisk fall day.  The smell of the salty sea air and the cry of the swooping seagulls while picking your way across the slippery rocks of a northwest beach is a great way to clear your head.  If you bend down and turn over a […]

Leaving Kauai

The last night I spent on Kauai, I saw this moon.  It was obscured by a cloud so I was actually able to take a photograph. It reminded me of how Edie loved to sit out on her front porch and watch the moon on clear evenings. I saw so many breathtaking views on my March […]

Wine on the deck

When I was heading to Hawaii right after my mom passed away, I felt very disconnected. Sitting on a deck gazing out at sunsets on Kauai, listening only to the sound of the crashing surf on the shore, was how I began the healing process. Yes, I felt the presence of amazing Edie.

Dinner by the sea

My mom loved the plumeria flower.  On our March trip to Kauai, it seemed as if she had ordered them just for me in her memory, because they were everywhere!  The plumeria flower’s intoxicating scent and beautiful colors make it the perfect flower for the Hawaiian lei. We went out to dinner at a restaurant […]

Greens and Grapes

Farmers markets are great locations to pick up in season fresh produce.  When traveling, you may also find local foods to try that you have never tasted such as the mountain apple and wing beans pictured in my post yesterday!  While growing up sitting at the family dinner table, I would hear my mom say, […]

Sustenance and Sunsets

One of the definitions of sustenance is to sustain, and food and drink should be a source of nourishment and strength.  When experiencing a loss, initially some do not feel like eating and may even feel nauseous.  Focusing on eating whole foods supports wellness. Have you ever seen or eaten wing beans?  I had not […]

Biking on Kauai

The first time I had done biking on Kauai was on this March 2017 visit.  We rented some very nice Kona rode bikes from Outfitters Kauai and biked around the Poipu area. Spending days relaxing and moving was good for the soul. I felt the presence of my mom. We also took the bikes up to a […]

Walking/Hiking in Hawaii

Another great feature of the Kauai Grand Hyatt is its proximity to the south side of the island.  It is a beautiful walk to visit Poipu’s beaches or head over in the evening to Brenneke’s Beach Broiler and listen to some live music. I thought of my mom when I walked past this umbrella with no […]
